<purpose>This data was gathered for a study that was seeking to determine the relationship between the spatial distribution of non-residual metals and total mercury in surficial sediments with clay content, and to idenfity metal enrichment regions in the Gulf of Paria. Several of the sampling sites were specifically located at the mouths of rivers that empty into the Gulf of Paria in order to investigate the contribution from land based sources of pollution.</purpose>

<procdesc>Sediment samples were collected in July, November/December 1998, and March and April 1999 using a 0.04m2 gran sampler (one, two, one and two grabs per station respectively). The sediment samples were taken in July and November/December 1998 were averaged to produce a single value for the wet season. The sediment samples taken in March and April 1999 were averaged to produce a single value for the dry season. The sediment attributes were then linked to the spatial locations provided by the Trimble GPS.</procdesc>
